IT Director

Job Description

The Foundation for Intentional Community (FIC) is seeking an experienced technologist to join our team. The IT Director role oversees all technical aspects of our WordPress website and other IT systems, including our online Communities Directory, e-commerce store, donations systems, online courses, marketing and analytics systems, and discussion space. The ideal candidate is comfortable managing a team of developers and working within a collaborative mission-oriented team, while being the primary person responsible for planning, coordinating and executing successful IT projects.

Job Requirements

Commitment: 120 hours/month, first month trial period

Compensation: $25/hr and increasing based on performance, contracted

Location: Remote position. Candidates must be in a time zone compatible with attending meetings during business hours in North American time zones


Key Areas of Responsibility

Management

  • Managing all technical aspects of FIC’s website and IT systems 
  • Supervising staff developers and external contractors
  • Managing the IT department budget, in collaboration with other staff
  • Managing account access for all IT-related accounts
  • Managing FIC’s version-controlled code base, including custom themes, plugins, and scripts

Development

  • Architecture and lead development for custom themes and plugins for FIC sites

Maintenance & troubleshooting

  • Selecting, maintaining, and troubleshooting 3rd party plugins and other software to support the growing needs of the FIC’s programs and staff
  • Handling errors and outages, including availability for emergency troubleshooting
  • Maintaining FIC’s issue tracking systems
  • Maintaining FIC’s hosting and server resources

Support & communications

  • Providing technical support to FIC staff via Slack, email, and video calls
  • Responding to queries about website functionality or features from website visitors
  • Working with FIC’s partners to provide data exports, explore opportunities for technical collaboration, and support allied initiatives

Desired Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years experience managing complex WordPress-based websites
  • Significant back end and/or front end development experience (please include code samples or repo links)
  • Educational degree in a technical field is a plus
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize, set and meet deadlines and project schedules, and manage resources to serve the needs of the organization
  • Experience working in a cooperative environment, whether in a worker-owned cooperative, non-profit organization, “teal” business,  or residential community
  • Familiarity with the intentional communities movement and FIC’s mission/work is a plus
