Moving Money: A Financial Activist Playbook for Racial Justice
Join presenter Jasmine Rashid for an interactive discussion on how to move money in line with racial justice.
You will learn how to influence the flow of money away from institutions in support of private prisons and the immigrant detention industry and toward companies and causes dedicated to social and racial justice.
We all have the power to influence the flow of money in our communities. Join Jasmine Rashid, of Oakland-based impact investing firm Candide Group, for this interactive workshop on how you can take actions, big and small, for moving money in line with racial justice. From influencing millions out of the private prison / immigrant detention industry, to directing investments into social impact companies, to changing who you buy from and bank with, this workshop is designed to be valuable to everyone regardless of how much money you have (or don’t have) in the bank.
During this session you will learn:
- How to make everyday decisions with your money that align with your values — where you spend, bank, invest, and donate
- How to influence the flow of money from institutions and organizations you’re connected to
- Live examples of how intentional communities are leveraging mission-aligned finance and financial activism
Workshop Presenter
Jasmine Rashid
Jasmine Rashid is a New York-raised, Oakland-based financial activist. After graduating from Swarthmore College with a special major in Peace and Conflict Studies, Jasmine’s national organizing work was instrumental in influencing big banks to commit to ending their financing of the private prison and immigrant detention industry.
In her role as the Director of Impact for impact investment advisory firm Candide Group and its Olamina Fund, she supports her team in directing millions of dollars annually, via loans and equity investments, to majority women and BIPOC-led social impact companies and funds.
Jasmine is an alum of the Congressman John Lewis fellowship through the Humanity in Action network, and a current Just Economy Institute fellow. Her upcoming book, The Financial Activist Playbook, aims to be an accessible, actionable guide to strategies (big and small) that everyday people can take in their communities to move money in line with racial and social justice.
