Communications Director

Job Description

The Foundation for Intentional Community (FIC) is seeking a Communications Director to oversee the public perception of our organization and manage a team of diverse communication roles. This position will be responsible for developing effective communication strategies and directing the execution of campaigns that are consistent with the strategy at large. They’ll ensure the quality of all communications material and maintain brand integrity across all platforms. Candidates must have familiarity with all forms of online media: landing pages, digital campaigns, social media, graphics, blog, video, and audio.  

As Communications Director, candidates will be at the forefront of shaping communications about the intentional communities movement. Therefore, they must have some personal experience with intentional communities and a passion for this movement, as well as the desire to deepen their understanding of the needs of our audience, build relationships with media, and stay current with global events. They must be comfortable working in the background to bring campaigns to life, as well as directly engaging with the public as a representative of the organization.

Job Qualifications

Commitment: 80 hours/month and increasing based on performance, first month trial period

Compensation: $25/hr, contracted

Location: Remote position, candidates must be in a time zone compatible with attending meetings during business hours in North American time zones with reliable internet access.


Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Establish and drive a multi-channel communications strategy
  • Lead a team of communication, marketing, and design professionals
  • Oversee all public communications and their timing of release, providing creativity, consistency, and quality
  • Assist in the creation of web, email, video, audio and print content as needed
  • Develop brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms
  • Manage media relations and develop contacts with media members, influencers, and community leaders
  • Track engagement across various platforms and make data-driven decisions
  • Represent FIC at events, in-house and partner online events especially
  • Manage a communications budget

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Passion for intentional communities, ideally lives in community, is starting a community, and/or has visited many communities
  • Commitment to diversity and equity work, as well as willingness to participate in organization trainings related to such work
  • Degree in communications, marketing, or related field
  • 5+ years of communications experience
  • Creative and confident leadership skills, a team player who can motivate others to produce high-level, brand-driven content
  • Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills (English language)
  • Analytical skills to solve problems and find the best way to convey a message
  • Organizational skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize projects while working on a deadline 
  • The technological ability to work on a variety of digital platforms and also create web and mobile content
    • Softwares in use for FIC communications: WordPress, MailChimp, Canva, Optin-Monster, Google Ads/Analytics, Facebook Ads, Monday.com
  • Website design and development (including A/B testing) is a plus!
