Recently we came across a link to the “Top 100 Documentaries We Can Use to Change the World” from Films for Action. Of course, we FIC-ers are suckers for such click-bait and in any case are eager to explore such lists. As the Bookstore Manager, I was especially excited for two important reasons:
- Whoa, there are so many amazing documentaries inspiring positive change! I’m a firm believer in sharing positivity and solutions as a clear step towards positive change. And this list is 100 options in that direction.
- FIC’s Community Bookstore carries a handful of these documentaries so we must be doing something right! Check out these films and the rest of our list for both DVDs and digital rentals.
Within Reach is a film documenting one resilient couple’s 6,500 mile bicycling journey across the United States in search of sustainable communities. Mandy and Ryan gave up their corporate jobs and houses to travel thousands of miles in search of a new home, while also looking within. One of the most important questions facing the world today is “Can humans live sustainably?” This film answers this in a resounding way – Yes!
Inhabit – A Permaculture Perspective is an inspiring feature length documentary that explores various permaculture projects, concepts, and people around the United States. What emerges are themes and messages that become accessible to a diverse audience. For those who are brand new to permaculture, or for those who are already deeply into the art and science of it, you will feel the thrill of seeing what is possible in these amazing projects, and be called to action.
Power of Community tells the story of the Cuban people’s hardship, ingenuity, and triumph over sudden adversity through cooperation, conservation, and community. Hailed as a glimpse into the future of peak oil for all of us, Power of Community goes a long way to turning our anticipation of the future from fear to hope. Along the way, we get a compassionate and lively look at Cuban culture.
